Hi there. This is my first blog post on the newly redesigned jakereedmusic.com, and my first blog post ever for that matter. I'll be journaling some thoughts in this very location from time to time - possibly in a formal or informal tone. It might be about music, drums, life, food, dogs, the Earth, the Universe ... or anything else ... you never know, but I'll try to do it often. However, don't expect the first few posts to be amazing. Like anything else in life that is worth improving, this is going to take some practice.
USC just hosted its 132nd commencement last Friday. It's crazy to think that it's been two years since I graduated - Class of '13, DMA in Jazz Studies (Fight On!). Anyway, it feels good to be doing what I love everyday, and to keep evolving as a musician and person. In thinking back to my studies at USC, learning how to constantly examine, re-examine, and change (i.e. evolve/grow) how I think about a certain topic or thing is among the top lessons I really learned as a doctoral candidate. I mean, this is something one works on throughout high school and undergrad, but Thornton's DMA program really tested my abilities and pushed me to get better. That being said, I'm also very glad it's over. Now there's more time to focus on other fun stuff - like making music.
Los Angeles is a great place to be right now, and I feel fortunate to be here and to be able to make music with so many friends and colleagues. There are a lot of cool things around the bend, and I intend on keeping this site up-to-date. If I don't, please email me and let me know that I'm slacking or leave a comment below.
Ok ... more to come soon!
